You can see more string comparison videos on the 'Ukes with Alex' channel At some point on your Ukulele journey you are likely to dabble or dive head first in to the world of Low G tuning and Low G strings. On average, 70% of the Tenor Ukuleles we see (at time of recording) are converted to Low G before they leave the store or are returned to us for set ups/pickup installations etc with a Low G fitted. Despite this, there isn't much information out there on which Low G's are right for certain styles and which Low G's you should try. How to play "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel on Ukulele and make it sound real! Paul Simon performs this song in Eb minor on his acoustic guitar. He places a capo on the 6th fret and opens up with an Am guitar chord. The version in this video is performed one semitone lower in Dm. Remember, a Ukulele with a Low G String (as in this video) is the same as a 4-string guitar with a Capo on the 5th fret. To play along with the record simply place a capo on fret 1 of your Ukulele. I decided not to do this as it took from the rich sound of the open strings during the opening verse. THE SOUND OF SILENCE - SONG FACTS thanks to Wikipedia.... "THE SOUND OF SILENCE" was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. An acoustic version of the song was recorded in March '64 at Columbia Studios in New York City for inclusion on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3am. It was released in October '64. The album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay which led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This is the version commonly known by everyone. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release. The single was released in September 1965. It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 1, 1966, causing the duo to reunite and hastily record their second album, which Columbia entitled Sounds of Silence to capitalize on the song's success. That was a close call! Vor allem bei den Tenor- oder Concert-Ukulelen kann man die 4. Saite (G') um eine Oktave tiefer stimmen und sie wird somit zum "Low G". Das Ganze hat einen kleinen Haken: Es ist nicht gut, die G'-Saite einfach tiefer zu stimmen denn so würde die Saite kaum gut klingen, da sie für das "Low G" zu dünn ist. Also muss halt eine neue G-Saite her, oder gerade ein neuer Saitensatz , eben mit einem tiefen G! Die anderen 3 Saiten werden normal gestimmt. Dadurch wird ein deutlich grösserer Tonumfang erzeugt, was sich vor allem beim Melodiespiel aber auch beim Begleiten klanglich positiv auswirkt: Das Spannende an der Sache: Du musst dabei keine neuen Akkorde lernen, die bleiben genau gleich wie bei der herkömmlichen Stimmung.
